Concurrent with the opening of the 2008 edition of the Singapore Biennale, Fortune Cookie Projects will host the first Showcase Singapore. Twenty-three major international galleries have been invited to exhibit the best work available on the primary and secondary markets from around the world.
Showcase Singapore will open on the same day as the Biennale - 9 September - and will be presented on the ground floor of the old City Hall, the main venue of this year's Biennale. Access to all Biennale-related events on 9 and 10 September will be restricted to specially-invited international VIPs. Public opening takes place on 11 September.
The participants in Showcase Singapore represent the most exciting work available internationally. The strategic aim of the Showcase is to provide Asian collectors with the opportunity to see major work by internationally-recognised artists and to offer Western collectors and art professionals a platform to experience new cutting-edge work being produced by artists from around the region.
The first Singapore Biennale was held in 2006. Organised by the National Arts Council of Singapore, the curatorial team was led by the internationally renowned Fumio Nanjo. He will again be the chief curator for the 2008 Singapore Biennale, working with co-curators Joselina Cruz and Matthew Ngui.
The Singapore government is heavily invested in making Singapore an art destination. With world-class hotel accommodations, shopping, restaurants, clubs, exhibition venues and sites for art, Singapore has the infrastructure to attract and support tourism from around the world. As a hub for the entire region, it is geographically the perfect place for the Asian sector to congregate - reaching outward from Southeast Asia to the Sino corridor, Asia Pacific, the Subcontinent and the Middle East. Most importantly, it is the most international of all of the cities in the Far East and with English as the lingua franca, it is also one of the most user-friendly.
The 2006 edition of the Singapore Biennale was the best organised and most professional of any of the biennales held in the region. The Singapore government has again thrown its full support behind the 2008 edition. Understanding the great potential in the confluence of art and wealth, the government is supporting the Formula I to be held during the 2008 Biennale. The organisers have seriously studied the benefits of art events to expand tourism and are determined to make Singapore a major art destination for the entire region.
Together with the Biennale, Fortune Cookie Projects is actively involved in developing a VIP program for international visitors, which will include access to all VIP Biennale and Showcase events. The organisers are also working with collectors and professional art organisations from overseas to make Singapore the main destination for the thousands of visitors who will attend the more than five art biennials and triennials taking place in Asia this September.
Being uniquely and officially tied to the 2008 Singapore Biennale promises to make Showcase Singapore an exciting and successful event for participants and visitors alike.
